On May, 9, 1945, at 2:10 a.m Moscow time, the world learnt that fascism was defeated. The familiar voice of Yuri Levitan, who read daily reports from the fronts, announced the end to the war. This news had long been waited for; people did not turn off their radios, waiting for good news. Lights in the houses went up, people knocked at their neighbours' door, embraced and went out into streets. Tables were laid outdoors. Voices saying "The war is over! Victory! Hurray!" were heard everywhere. The 9th of May has become a national holiday. At 10 at night Victory Salute was fired in Moscow-30 volleys from 1000 guns.
